Product Description
1st / 2nd Century A.D. An excellent pair of decorative Roman "Samian Ware" shards found many years back on a Roman Villa Site in Gloucestershire and from a Midlands collection. Both shards hail from high quality embossed bowls, the larger shard featuring a Roman Military Standard and statues of Roman Deities standing upon columns, each displayed in vertical segments and separated by zig-zag dividing border. The smaller shard features a decorative undulating border at the top with the upper torso of the God Pan below (Pan is primarily identified with Faunus, a deity of the wild, forests, and fields). Both shards have some light rubbing in parts from their time buried in the Earth but are otherwise in very nice condition, have deep shiny glaze and clear and bold embossed details. The larger shard measures 66mm wide x 55mm high approx. and the smaller 20mm wide x 52mm high, the pair only
