c.60,000-40,000 B.C. An excellent Paleolithic Mousterian (Neanderthal) flint chopper with a small fossil sponge inclusion, found in the early part of the 20th Century at the famous Neanderthal site of Peyzac Le Moustier, in the Dordogne, France and from an old French lithic collection. A chunky and tactile tool, bifacially well worked to form a thick robust chopping edge and possibly once used in the hand for breaking open animal bones to extract the nutritious bone marrow. Original pebble cortex remains on butt end to facilitate a good grip in the hand. Old ink inscription on one side citing "LES FERELIES PAYZAC" plus a small but nicely detailed fossil sponge inclusion can be clearly seen embedded in the flint on the main worked surface of the chopper just below the ink inscription. Totally intact and in lovely condition with an attractive old collection shiny patina to worked surfaces, a very nice example of its type, 85mm long x 75mm wide x 30mm high
