c.60,000-40,000 B.C. An excellent Paleolithic Mousterian (Neanderthal) "Levallois" flint spear point found in the early part of the 20th Century at the famous Neanderthal site of Peyzac Le Moustier, in the Dordogne, France and from an old French lithic collection. Formed from a large flint flake struck from a prepared flint core with further retouching along both edges to hone and sharpen them, blade edges still fairly sharp, largely smooth on underside. End of spear head flaked and thinned to allow hafting into the end of a wooden shaft using tree resin and sinew. Most likely from a smaller thrusting spear. Old ink inscription on upper surface citing "HOGEL LE MOUSTIER". Small piece missing from lower edge of left side of spear head (not detracting) otherwise intact and in lovely condition with an attractive old collection patina and further enhanced by a few iron oxide highlights. A good size and appealing example of its type, 82mm long x 58mm wide x 20mm at thickest point
