c.2nd/3rd Century A.D. An excellent Roman votive lead "Axe pendant" found in Dorset in the 1980's and from an Essex collection. Of a typical battle axe form with slender main body with a wide flared blade edge, pierced through for suspension from a chain or lanyard where the axe handle would normally reside. These little axe pendants were worn both as a protective talisman and are also often found deposited in and around Roman sacred sites, possibly as an offering to the Gods for good fortune in battle. This example is a particularly nice one, totally intact and in lovely condition for ancient lead with no knocks, damage or distortion. Good surfaces with a pleasant ovearll whitish surface patination, an interesting and appealing Roman item, 24mm long x 14mm wide across blade.
