c.3rd / 4th Century A.D. An excellent Roman bronze nail cleaner from a portable cosmetic set or chatelain, found in Oxfordshire and from a Northamptonshire collection. This nail cleaner is a particularly nice example with incised line border around all sides and decorative knurling to the suspension loop neck; of typical form featuring bulbous body tapering down to a pronged tip for cleaning underneath nails. Possibly once silvered or gilded but now solely bronze. It would have been one of several small bronze cosmetic tools attached to a single hoop and either carried or attached to and worn on a chain from the waist, in the form of a Chatelain. Totally intact and in very nice condition with good surfaces and a pleasant shiny patina, 40mm long x 7mm wide.
