c.4th Century A.D. An excellent Roman redware terracotta oil lamp featuring the moulded design of a Horse & Rider on the upper surface found in the early 20th Century in Palestine and from an old Suffolk collection. Of sturdy manufacture with a solid handle, wide main body and elongate spout. These oil lamps would have been filled with oil and a small wick placed in the spout and lit. These simple lamps were not only used within a domestic environment for lighting but were also placed in house hold shrines and places of worship. A couple of minute knocks and some minor wear as is to be expected from being buried in the earth for the best part of two millennia, otherwise intact with good sound surfaces and in very good overall condition for its age, a good sized and appealing Roman lamp, supplied with perspex display stand, 118mm long x 62mm wide x 55mm high
