Pre-Classic Mayan Period c.900-300 B.C. An extremely rare Pre-classic period Mayan pottery figurative oil lamp from an old Yorkshire private collection but originally excavated in the Mexico area of South America on the 21/02/1952 and sold by a dealer in Indiana U.S.A. A large and very unsual oil lamp in that it features two standing figures holding a large ceremonial bowl into which oil or animal fats would have been placed together with some form of wick and then lit. This lamp may have been for personal use or placed in a household shrine as an offering. The figures would have once been glazed in many colours, traces of which still remain in parts. An extremely rare and seldom seen form of Mayan oil lamp, heavy and robust, a feint and stable kiln firing crack on one side of neck on just one figure otherwise lamp totally intact and unrepaired and in very good overall condition for its great age, a facinating and appealing item, 113mm long x 73mm wide x 110mm high.
