c.8th/9th Century A.D. An unfinished Anglo Saxon Deer antler knife handle unearthed many years ago alongside other antler objects, combs, bone pins and knife handles on a known Anglo Saxon artisans workshop site in Ipswich, Suffolk and from an old Essex collection. The antler has been neatly sawn off and another partial saw cut is also visible on one surface. Complete versions of the Antler handles show that the point is then usually sawn off and the narrowing end sawn down the middle for part of its length effectively bifurcating it; a narrow bronze knife blade is then sandwiched into the handle which is then drilled through and riveted to secure the blade. Totally intact and in very good condition and an interesting and seldom encountered Saxon artefact, 127mm long x 24mm diameter at widest.
