c.2500-2000 B.C. An unusual but appealing small Neolithic votive mottled ground stone axe from an old Derbyshire Collection. Fashioned from an attractive green and white mottled hard stone, carefully shaped then ground smooth. Of thick heavy and robust form with a tapered and rounded butt, sides flaring out slightly to a stubby bi-facially ground and smoothed chamfered blade edge. Clearly made as a votive offering for deposition at a sacred place as of no real functional use but an interesting and appealing little Neolithic artefact nonetheless. Totally intact and in excellent overall condition, 57mm long x 38mm wide x 22mm thick.
