SOLD
c.13th Century A.D. An unusual Medieval bronze folding casket key found in North Yorkshire and from a Durham collection. The main body is similar in form to a 13th Stirrup ring but where the bezel would normally be it has a short pivoting stem with a key bit on the end, most likely used for opening a small casket or jewellery box. The reason for the hinged stem is unclear but possibly it allowed it to be concealed more easily for safe keeping. Totally intact and in very good condition with a dark greenish patination with some surface dirt adhering from its unearthing, a scarce and intriguing little item, 37mm long (folded 23mm) x 19mm at hoop,
